Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Mosquito Beach Backcountry Access
Forgotten logging road to Superior's hidden beaches
This forgotten Forest Service access road winds through the dense hardwood forests behind Pictured Rocks’ famous sandstone cliffs, ending at the isolated Mosquito Beach on Lake Superior. The 8-mile route follows old logging roads through swampy lowlands and crosses Mosquito Creek twice — both crossings can be knee-deep during spring runoff or after heavy rains. Dense tag alder and fallen timber create natural obstacles, while seasonal beaver activity can flood sections of the trail for weeks at a time.
High-clearance 4WD essential, with recovery gear recommended for the creek crossings and muddy sections. Late summer through early fall offers the best conditions when water levels drop and mosquitoes become tolerable. No cell service once you leave the main park road. The payoff is complete solitude on a pristine stretch of Superior’s shoreline, with excellent dispersed camping opportunities and access to backcountry hiking trails. Fuel up in Munising — there’s nothing out here.
