Manistique River Logging Road Historic Circuit
Timber baron trails through untouched forest
This network of historic logging roads follows the Manistique River through some of Michigan’s most remote backcountry, connecting abandoned logging camps, old-growth pine stands, and forgotten river crossings used during the state’s timber boom era. The route traces Forest Roads 2258 and 2173 through dense forest where massive white pines somehow escaped the sawyer’s blade, passing the ruins of Camp 12 logging camp and the historic Driggs River railroad bridge. Multiple river fords and the notorious Pine Creek crossing at mile 16 separate casual tourists from serious backcountry travelers.
This difficult route demands experienced drivers with winch-equipped 4WD vehicles, especially during spring runoff when creek crossings become genuine challenges. Best attempted June through September when water levels drop, though even then expect muddy conditions and challenging terrain. No permits needed, but inform someone of your plans—cell service is non-existent and the nearest help is hours away in Manistique. The reward is camping beside pristine trout streams in country that looks exactly as the lumber barons left it a century ago.
