Hiawatha National Forest Pictured Rocks Backcountry Dispersed Sites
A network of primitive camping spots scattered along abandoned logging roads roughly 2-3 miles inland from Lake Superior’s Pictured Rocks shoreline. Sites are tucked into mature maple and birch forest with seasonal wildflower displays and small creek crossings. Most accommodate 1-2 vehicles in natural clearings with remnant fire rings. The area offers solitude and serves as a quieter alternative to the busy established campgrounds near Munising.
Access requires navigating unmarked two-tracks branching off Forest Road 2258. A GPS track or detailed forest service map is essential as signage is minimal. Roads can be muddy and rutted in spring, becoming more passable by mid-June. Peak bug season runs through July.
