Pictured Rocks Miners Beach Road
Mining heritage meets Superior shoreline
This forgotten industrial road once hauled iron ore from inland mines to Lake Superior shipping points, winding through dense hardwood forests before emerging at the dramatic sandstone cliffs of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The route passes through the ghost town of Grand Sable where massive steam shovels once loaded ore cars, then navigates technical creek crossings and steep grades down to Miners Beach where rusted machinery still sits in the surf.
Easy to moderate difficulty suits most high-clearance vehicles, though spring mud season and winter snow make it impassable from November through April. No permits needed within the national lakeshore boundaries, but respect wilderness camping regulations. Gas up in Grand Marais — it’s the last reliable fuel for 50 miles. The reward is exclusive access to some of Superior’s most spectacular coastline, plus the chance to explore authentic mining ruins that tell the story of Michigan’s iron ore boom.
