Hiawatha National Forest Forest Road 2173 Dispersed Sites
Forest Road 2173 winds through dense mixed forest between Newberry and the Lake Superior shoreline, offering numerous informal pull-offs suitable for dispersed camping. Most sites are small clearings that accommodate one or two rigs, with established fire rings left by previous campers. The area stays relatively quiet except during fall color season when leaf-peepers crowd the region.
Access from M-123 north of Newberry — the forest road is well-maintained gravel for the first several miles before transitioning to rougher dirt. Sites are unmarked and first-come basis. Water available from seasonal streams, but treat before drinking.
