Hiawatha National Forest Sand Bay Dispersed Sites

Dispersed Camping

A string of primitive sites tucked into the forest edge above Sand Bay’s rocky shoreline on Lake Superior. These spots offer filtered water views through mature pines and hemlocks, with direct trail access to the cobble beach below. Sites accommodate rigs up to about 28 feet, though maneuvering gets tight. The area sees moderate use from kayakers and anglers, busiest during salmon runs in fall.

Access via Forest Road 2258 off H-58 — the last 2 miles are rough dirt with some washboard sections and occasional mud holes after rain. No services or water, pack it all in. Cell service is spotty to none. Best spring through fall, though the access road can get sketchy in mud season.
