Lake Superior Shipwreck Coast Backroads
Shipwreck Coast hidden access roads
The maze of old logging roads between Grand Marais and Munising provides access to some of Lake Superior’s most remote and historically significant shoreline, where over 350 shipwrecks lie beneath the cold, clear waters. These unmarked two-tracks wind through Superior National Forest to hidden beaches and bluff overlooks where you can spot the masts of the Bermuda and other wrecks in shallow water. The road to Au Sable Point requires careful navigation through deep sand and offers access to the 1874 lighthouse and several visible shipwrecks offshore.
Easy to moderate difficulty with standard 4WD or AWD sufficient for most routes, though soft sand sections near beaches can challenge inexperienced drivers. Best accessed May through October when snow doesn’t block forest roads. No permits required for forest service roads, but respect private property boundaries. Fuel and supplies available in Munising or Grand Marais—this is remote country with no services between towns. Perfect for history buffs and photographers seeking iconic Great Lakes shipwreck country without the crowds of more popular attractions.
