Hiawatha National Forest Two Hearted River Dispersed Sites
These scattered dispersed sites sit along the Two Hearted River in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the same waters Ernest Hemingway made famous in his writing. The sandy spots accommodate 4-6 rigs comfortably, tucked among towering pines with river access for fishing brook trout. Most sites offer fire rings and basic pull-through clearance for larger rigs. Expect solitude except during peak fall color season when leaf-peepers converge on the area.
Access via Forest Road 407 requires high-clearance due to deep sand sections — air down and keep momentum. The road can become impassable when wet. No services for 25 miles, so come prepared with water and supplies. Open May through October, though black flies can be brutal in June.
