Hiawatha National Forest Forest Road 2204 Pine Bowl Lake Circuit
Sandstone rock gardens in Michigan's wilderness heart
Forest Road 2204 winds through the heart of Hiawatha’s most rugged country, where Cambrian sandstone ridges create natural rock gardens that’ll test your line choice. The 15-mile circuit connects Pine Bowl Lake with several smaller pothole lakes carved by glacial action, threading between massive white pines that survived the logging era. Rocky Creek crossing at mile 8 becomes the crux — a technical boulder field that requires careful spotting and momentum management.
Difficult rating demands true 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear. Stock Jeeps and similar make it through, but expect body contact on the tighter squeezes between sandstone slabs. Best tackled June through September when creek levels drop. No permits needed, but bring everything — nearest fuel is 35 miles back in Manistique. Multiple primitive camping spots along Pine Bowl Lake’s shoreline reward those who push through the technical sections. This is pure North Woods solitude with some of Michigan’s most challenging rock crawling thrown in.
