Snowy Range Pass to Brooklyn Lake
Alpine granite gauntlet above Wyoming's treeline
This high-country route links Snowy Range Pass with Brooklyn Lake through some of Wyoming’s most unforgiving alpine terrain, following cairned paths across granite slabs and talus fields where July snowstorms can trap the unprepared. The track climbs above Mirror Lake past the Libby Flats observation deck before threading between Medicine Bow Peak and Browns Peak on narrow shelves where one wrong move means a thousand-foot tumble. Ancient Precambrian granite formations create a moonscape of house-sized boulders and hidden crevasses that challenge even experienced mountain drivers.
Difficult high-altitude route demanding rock-crawling skills, skid plates, and aggressive tires. Weather changes instantly above treeline—carry chains, recovery gear, and emergency supplies even in August. Best attempted July through early September when most snow clears, but be prepared to turn back if storms roll in. No permits required, but dispersed camping restricted near lakes. Cell service spotty at best. This isn’t a Sunday drive—it’s serious alpine exploration that rewards careful drivers with views across three states and the humbling realization of just how small we are in these mountains.
