Flinders Ranges Brachina Gorge Geological Trail — Wilpena Pound to Blinman via the Pound Wall and Brachina Creek

The Brachina Gorge Geological Trail runs from the western wall of Wilpena Pound east through Brachina Creek to Blinman in the central Flinders Ranges — roughly 55 kilometres of dirt and creek-bed driving through the Ediacaran rock sequence, some of the oldest and best-exposed fossil-bearing strata on earth. The creek crossing at the gorge entrance sets the tone immediately: loose river cobbles, steep approaches, and a narrow slot between ancient quartzite walls painted in bands of red, purple, and ochre. Interpretive markers call out specific rock formations by age — you’ll drive past the Brachina Formation (580 million years old) and the Bunyeroo Formation on the same road. Yellow-footed rock wallabies work the cliff ledges above the creek most mornings.
A high-clearance 4WD handles this in dry conditions without drama — the creek bed sections are the technical element, and they’re manageable for a competent driver in a stock Landcruiser or Defender. The gorge can flood fast and without warning after rain; check with the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park rangers before entering if any weather is nearby. Best season is April through October — summer heat is brutal and flash flood risk spikes in January and February. Permits are required to camp inside the national park; sites at Aroona Valley and Trezona are excellent bases. Fuel in Hawker before heading in. The Flinders reward drivers with solitude and scale that most Australians drive right past on their way to somewhere else.

Can a stock Hilux or Prado handle this trail without a lift?
Yes. A stock high-clearance 4WD like a Hilux, Prado, or 4Runner with factory all-terrain tyres is the minimum — this is not a 2WD or crossover route. The rocky creek crossings and loose shale sections in Brachina Gorge will catch low-clearance vehicles out.
When is Brachina Gorge passable and what shuts it down?
April through October is the reliable window — summer heat is brutal and flash flooding can close the gorge with zero warning after rain. The creek crossings through Brachina are the first thing to blow out; check SA Parks conditions before you leave because there's no cell service once you're in.
Do I need a permit and is there a park entry fee?

The multiple Brachina Creek crossings are the crux — shallow but rocky-bottomed and unpredictable after any upstream rain. The track through the gorge is narrow with loose shale and tight rock shelves in places; it's not technically extreme, but it demands attention and punishes inattention at speed.
Is there anywhere to camp along the route and how far is the nearest fuel?
There are designated campsites within Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park — Aroona Dam is the closest option along the gorge corridor, but book ahead through SA Parks as sites are limited. Fuel up in Hawker before you start; it's the only reliable servo in the area and there's nothing between Wilpena Pound and Blinman.
