Ocoee River Gorge Forest Road 77
Cherokee National Forest whitewater gorge runner
Forest Road 77 cuts a rough path along the Ocoee River’s north bank, where Class III-IV rapids thunder past your door handles during spring runoff. This Cherokee National Forest service road was originally punched through in the 1930s for dam construction access, and today it serves as a technical bypass around the tourist-heavy US-64. The route threads between towering granite bluffs and the churning Ocoee, passing the historic Ocoee No. 3 Dam powerhouse before climbing into mixed hardwood forest above the gorge rim.
Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD due to loose rock shelves, water bars, and seasonal washouts that’ll scrape paint off anything too low. Best tackled April through October when creek crossings stay manageable and the Forest Service keeps major blowdowns cleared. No permits needed, but fuel up in Ducktown — it’s 40 miles of nothing once you commit. Dispersed camping is legal along the route, and you’ll earn some of Tennessee’s finest whitewater views without the raft rental fees.
