Lauca National Park Altiplano Circuit

The Lauca Circuit cuts through Chile’s highest national park at 4,500 meters, where the air is thin enough to make your diesel struggle and the landscape looks more Martian than terrestrial. This 65-kilometer loop connects Putre village with Chungará Lake via rough volcanic tracks, passing the perfectly conical Parinacota Volcano and ancient Aymara settlements that have survived here for over a millennium. This is high-altitude technical driving where altitude sickness hits harder than the rocks. Best tackled April through November when snow doesn’t block the passes, but pack extreme weather gear year-round because storms roll in fast. No fuel available once you leave Putre, so carry extra jerry cans.
