Can a naturally aspirated petrol 4WD handle this circuit?

Not reliably. At 14,764 ft max elevation, naturally aspirated engines lose roughly 40% of their power output — a turbo diesel 4WD is the minimum for maintaining control on steep rocky climbs and soft volcanic surfaces. A gutless engine at altitude is a genuine safety problem here, not just an inconvenience.

When is the circuit closed or impassable?

December through March is the Bolivian winter rainy season (locally called 'invierno altiplánico'), which turns dirt tracks into mud and swells the water crossings unpredictably — some sections become impassable. April through November is the reliable window, with the driest and most stable conditions running May through October.

Do you need a permit to drive through Lauca National Park?
