Hell’s Gate Road runs 45 kilometers of brutal, narrow shelf road clinging to the Fraser Canyon walls between Boston Bar and Lytton, British Columbia. Originally a mining access route from the 1800s gold rush, this road drops 1,200 feet through switchbacks carved into cliff faces with no guardrails and barely room for one vehicle. The infamous “Death Corner” at kilometer 32 has claimed multiple trucks over the decades—there’s literally nowhere to go but over the edge.
This is expert-level technical driving requiring high clearance 4WD, skid plates, and serious off-road experience. Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner run Hell's Gate Road, or does the rig actually need armor?
Stock rigs will get hurt here. The rock surface throws up sharp edges constantly, and the exposed lines put your sliders, skids, and differentials at real risk. Come with full underbody armor, a lift, and a locker — this isn't a trail where you find out what your truck is missing.
When does the trail actually open after winter, and is October pushing it?
