Camping Sajama — Parque Nacional Sajama Village Basecamp
This is the real deal for the Bolivian Altiplano circuit. The campground sits in and around the village of Sajama itself, with several family-run sites offering basic pitched-tent areas and rudimentary shelters within the park boundary. You’re camping at altitude — wind hammers through here at night, temperatures drop well below freezing year-round, and the views of Sajama’s perfect volcanic cone above the queñua forests are genuinely otherworldly. Expect basic pit toilets, occasional water from the village, and the possibility of negotiating a hot shower at one of the guesthouses. No hookups, no dump station, no nonsense.
Access from Cosapa to the north is via well-tracked dirt road through the altiplano — passable for high-clearance 4WD, rough in the wet season (December–March). The park entrance fee is paid at the ranger station in the village. Best season is May through October when the dry skies hold and the roads don’t turn to mud. Altitude sickness is a real factor — acclimatize before pushing hard.
Highest-peak basecamp on the Bolivian roof.
