Ruta X-731 – Putre to Parinacota Altiplano Loop
Ancient villages in Chile's highest altiplano
The X-731 branches off from Putre into some of Chile’s most remote altiplano country, connecting traditional Aymara villages like Parinacota and Chucuyo through gravel tracks above 4,300 meters. The route passes Lago Chungará and skirts the base of Volcán Parinacota, with technical sections through volcanic sand and river crossings that can strand vehicles during the wet season. Ancient stone churches and terraced agricultural sites dot the landscape, remnants of pre-Columbian settlement.
Moderate to difficult terrain requires high-clearance 4WD and altitude preparation – you’re above 4,000 meters for most of the route. June through September offers the driest conditions, but temperatures can drop below freezing at night year-round. Fuel up in Putre and carry extra water and food; villages have limited supplies. The isolation and cultural immersion make this one of Chile’s most authentic backcountry experiences, but respect the altitude and weather.
