Picos de Europa N-625 High Route

Limestone cathedral route through Spanish peaks

Moderate

The N-625 cuts through the heart of the Picos de Europa, where Spanish shepherds once drove their flocks between summer pastures. This route climbs from sea-level Asturias through the Puerto del Pontón pass at 1,280 meters, threading between limestone towers that rise straight up like broken cathedral spires. The road narrows to single-lane stretches carved into cliff faces, with the Sella River gorge dropping away below your passenger door. Hairpin turns stack one on top of another as you climb toward the Mirador del Naranjo de Bulnes, where Europe’s most technical rock faces loom overhead.

This isn’t a technical trail—it’s a proper mountain road that demands respect for exposure and weather. Any vehicle can handle the pavement, but you’ll want good brakes and nerves for the drop-offs. Summer brings traffic; spring and fall offer clearer views without the crowds. Fuel up in Cangas de Onís—services are sparse until you reach the Cantabrian side. The payoff is some of Europe’s most dramatic mountain scenery, with wild camping spots tucked into high meadows where you can hear nothing but cowbells and wind through limestone.
