Trans-Pyrenees HRP High Route
Epic mountain spine crossing from Atlantic to Med
The Trans-Pyrenees HRP follows shepherds’ tracks and military roads along the Franco-Spanish border for 800 unrelenting kilometers from Hendaye on the Atlantic to Banyuls-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean. This is the vehicular version of the famous hiking route, threading through passes like Port de Boucharo and Portillon d’Orlu while staying above 1,500 meters for most of the journey. The track crosses into Spain repeatedly, demanding passport checks at remote border posts.
This is expert-level overlanding requiring serious preparation, proper maps, and self-recovery gear. High-clearance 4WD is mandatory for rocky sections, with some technical climbs exceeding 25% gradient. Best attempted June through September when snow clears, though weather changes rapidly at altitude. Fuel and resupply opportunities are sparse—plan accordingly. The payoff is crossing an entire mountain range on tracks most people will never see, with camping opportunities at remote refuges and designated bivouac zones.
