Trans Euro Trail Southern (TET-S) – Spain Section
Spain's rugged TET backbone through Andalusian peaks
The Trans Euro Trail’s southern spine carves through Spain’s most dramatic terrain, linking ancient shepherd paths and Roman military roads into a 1,200-kilometer adventure. From the Pyrenees border to Gibraltar’s shadow, this route threads through the Sierra Nevada, crosses the Guadalquivir valley, and tackles the limestone chaos of Ronda’s white villages. The Despeñaperros pass descent alone will test your nerve—a twisting goat track that drops 800 meters through knife-edge granite walls where Napoleonic armies met their match.
Rated difficult for good reason, this section demands serious 4WD capability, recovery gear, and navigation skills. Summer heat makes this a spring/fall proposition, with water scarce between villages. Permits aren’t required, but fuel planning is critical—some stretches run 150km between stations. Wild camping is legal but fire restrictions apply. You’ll earn every kilometer on this one, but the payoff is experiencing Spain’s raw highland soul away from the coastal crowds.
