Tizi n’Test has been breaking vehicles and testing drivers since Berber traders first pushed mules over this 2,100-meter pass linking the imperial cities to the desert gold routes. The modern road follows the same impossible lines, carved into vertical cliff faces with drops that disappear into the morning mist. Local drivers attack the hairpins at speeds that defy physics while your knuckles go white gripping the wheel, dodging overloaded trucks and donkey carts on corners blind enough to hide a semi.
Any capable vehicle can handle the paved sections, but washouts and rockfall create technical obstacles that demand high clearance and patience. Winter brings snow above 1,800 meters and ice that closes the pass entirely. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, but summer heat in the valleys below hits 45°C. Carry water, spare parts, and respect for the mountain. The High Atlas doesn’t negotiate, and neither should you when weather turns ugly.
