Atlas Mountain High Route

High Atlas traverse through Morocco's mountain backbone

Moderate

The High Atlas pistes wind through Morocco’s most dramatic mountain country, connecting remote Berber villages via ancient mule tracks turned 4×4 routes. The classic traverse runs from Marrakech through the Tizi n’Test pass, then east via Taroudant to the Tizi n’Tichka, climbing above 7,000 feet through cedar forests and barren moonscapes. River crossings are common — the Ourika and Nfiss valleys can run deep after spring snowmelt, and the rocky sections around Imlil demand careful tire placement and steady nerves on narrow mountain shelves.

This is moderate to difficult terrain requiring experienced mountain driving and proper preparation. High-clearance 4WD is mandatory, along with tire repair kit, tow strap, and extra fuel. Spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) offer the best conditions — summer is brutally hot at lower elevations, winter brings snow and ice above 6,000 feet. What you get is authentic Morocco: tagines in mountain villages, stunning valley views, and the challenge of navigating routes that haven’t changed much since the French colonial era. Wild camping is possible with landowner permission.
