Ruta del Cobre Sewell Mining Ghost Town Circuit
Copper ghost town carved into the Andes.
Sewell sits frozen in time at 2,130 meters — a complete mining town built into the Andean mountainside where 15,000 people once lived extracting copper for the world. The approach road switchbacks up from Rancagua through desert foothills, passing massive tailings and industrial ruins before reaching the ‘City of Stairs’ itself. UNESCO protects the site now, but the mining roads continue higher to active Teniente operations and spectacular overlooks of the central Andes.
Moderate route suitable for most high-clearance vehicles, though the altitude and switchbacks demand attention. Regular passenger cars can reach the lower viewpoints, but the full circuit requires 4WD. Open year-round but winter brings snow and ice. Tours available through CODELCO, but the real adventure lies in the network of mining access roads that spider higher into the mountains. You’ll witness Chile’s copper legacy carved directly into the continental spine — brutal, beautiful, and absolutely essential to understanding this country.
