Ruta Provincial 307 – Laguna del Diamante Circuit

The drive to Laguna del Diamante cuts through some of Mendoza’s most alien terrain, where ancient lava flows create a moonscape punctuated by guanaco herds and condor thermals. This remote circuit climbs from 1,200 meters to over 3,200 meters, threading through volcanic valleys and crossing multiple stream beds before revealing the turquoise waters of Laguna del Diamante, backdropped by the imposing mass of Volcán Maipo. The final approach requires navigating loose volcanic scree and rocky outcrops that’ll test your line choice.

This is legitimate high-altitude overlanding that demands a capable 4WD with good ground clearance and reliable cooling systems. Weather changes fast above 3,000 meters, so pack winter gear even in summer. October through April offers the best access, though snow can close the upper sections without warning. No permits required, but fuel up in San Carlos – it’s a long way back. The payoff is camping beside one of Argentina’s most pristine alpine lakes with zero light pollution and the kind of silence that makes city folk nervous.
