Scoresby Land to Ittoqqortoormiit Coastal Route

Arctic expedition to the world's loneliest settlement.

Expert

The Scoresby Land to Ittoqqortoormiit route cuts across East Greenland’s most forbidding terrain, following ancient Inuit hunting paths along Scoresby Sound—the world’s largest fjord system. This 180-kilometer traverse demands ice road experience as you navigate frozen waterways, cross glacial outwash plains, and thread between towering icebergs locked in winter ice. The route passes the abandoned weather station at Danmarkshavn before descending into the Hurry Inlet valley system toward Ittoqqortoormiit.

This is expert-level Arctic travel requiring a fully prepared expedition vehicle, satellite communication, and cold weather survival gear. Best attempted April through June when sea ice is stable but temperatures allow vehicle operation. No fuel available between endpoints—carry minimum 400 liters plus emergency reserves. The payoff is reaching one of the world’s most isolated communities and witnessing the raw power of Greenland’s ice sheet calving into the Arctic Ocean.
