Constable Point Airfield to Mestersvig Mining Camp Road
Mining ghost road through dramatic fjord country
Built in the 1950s to haul lead-zinc ore from Mestersvig’s mines to Constable Point’s airfield, this industrial road cuts through East Greenland’s most dramatic fjord country. The route parallels Kong Oscar Fjord’s massive icebergs while climbing through mining-scarred valleys littered with abandoned equipment and workers’ barracks. Key waypoint is the Ella Island viewpoint where you can glass for Arctic foxes among the rusted machinery before the final technical descent into Mestersvig’s ghost camp.
Moderate difficulty with some technical rock sections and seasonal stream crossings. High-clearance 4WD minimum, but experienced drivers can manage in decent weather. Best June-September when ice breakup allows navigation. No permits but inform local authorities of travel plans. Fuel and supplies available at Constable Point only. What you get: industrial Arctic history frozen in time and some of Greenland’s most photogenic fjord scenery without the tour groups.
