Similkameen River Valley Pioneer Road
Historic ranch road through dry grassland valleys
This forgotten pioneer route follows the upper Similkameen River through some of BC’s most remote ranch country, passing weathered homesteads and cattle operations that date back to the 1880s. The road parallels the river for nearly 40 kilometers, crossing multiple tributaries and threading between golden grassland hills that turn deep green in spring. Key landmarks include the ruins of Hedley’s old stamp mill and several historic ranches still working the same land their founders claimed over a century ago.
Easy to moderate difficulty with mostly well-maintained gravel and dirt surfaces, though spring runoff can create muddy sections and a few creek crossings. Any high-clearance vehicle handles this route comfortably, with 4WD recommended only during wet conditions. Open year-round but best in late spring through fall when wildflowers paint the hillsides. No permits required, and camping is possible on Crown land with landowner permission near private sections. Cell service is virtually non-existent. Fuel and supplies available in Princeton or Keremeos.
