Coquihalla River Road
Abandoned railway grade turned gnarly 4x4 challenge
The Coquihalla River Road follows the abandoned Kettle Valley Railway grade through some of the most unforgiving terrain in southern BC. This rocky, technical route parallels the tumbling Coquihalla River for 35 kilometers, passing the ruins of Portia station and multiple washouts where spring floods have carved new channels across the old railbed. The highlight is Jessica Bridge, a surviving KVR trestle that requires careful navigation around collapsed sections.
This is serious 4×4 territory demanding high clearance, skid plates, and recovery gear. Multiple water crossings can turn deadly during spring runoff, making late summer the only safe season. No services exist for 50+ kilometers, so carry extra fuel, tools, and emergency supplies. The payoff is experiencing one of BC’s most challenging historic transportation corridors in complete solitude, with excellent camping spots along the river where old railway cuts provide level ground.
