Skardu-Deosai Plains Circuit
World's second-highest plateau at 14,100 feet
The Deosai Plains stretch across 3,000 square kilometers of high-altitude plateau at 14,100 feet, earning the name ‘Land of Giants’ for good reason. This remote circuit from Skardu loops through Pakistan’s second-highest plateau, where Himalayan brown bears roam meadows carpeted in wildflowers during the brief summer. The rough track crosses the Deosai Top at 14,930 feet before dropping to Sheosar Lake, a mirror-perfect alpine tarn reflecting snow-capped peaks in water so clear you can see the bottom at 40 feet.
This is expert-level high-altitude driving requiring serious preparation—altitude sickness hits hard at these elevations, and weather can turn deadly fast. A capable 4WD with low-range transfer case is mandatory; the rocky tracks and river crossings will punish anything less. The plateau is accessible only July through September when snow clears. No fuel, water, or services exist on the plateau—carry everything. Camping is permitted but regulated to protect the fragile ecosystem. What you get is one of Asia’s last untouched wilderness experiences.
