Okatibbee Creek Wildlife Management Area Limestone Bluff Explorer

Limestone shelf technical driving near Meridian

Expert

Okatibbee Creek carved deep valleys through Cretaceous limestone, creating some of Mississippi’s most dramatic topography just minutes from Meridian. This technical route follows maintenance roads along limestone shelves 100 feet above the creek, passing Civil War earthworks from the 1864 Meridian Campaign and several cave openings in the bluff faces. The crux comes at Limestone Gap, where you’ll navigate a narrow shelf road with loose rock on one side and a 75-foot drop on the other — no place for a careless moment behind the wheel.

This is expert-level driving that demands rock sliders, good tires, and steady nerves. The limestone shelves are slippery when wet and crumbly when dry. Best attempted during fall and winter when temperatures cool and creek levels drop. No overnight camping allowed in the WMA, but Okatibbee Lake State Park nearby offers facilities. The reward is some of the most unique geology in Mississippi and views across creek valleys that feel more like Arkansas Ozarks than the coastal plain. Bring recovery gear and don’t attempt this route alone — cell service is nonexistent once you drop into the valleys.
