Bienville National Forest Hurricane Camille Memorial Forest Road

Drive through hurricane history and pine recovery.

Moderate

Hurricane Camille Memorial Forest Road traces the path of devastation left by the Category 5 hurricane that carved a 100-mile swath through Mississippi in 1969. The route winds through replanted longleaf pine forests that have reclaimed the hurricane corridor, passing interpretive markers and the remnants of old homesteads flattened by 200-mph winds. Deep sand sections alternate with clay bottoms, and the road crosses several unnamed creeks via low-water concrete fords that become impassable during heavy rains.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for the sand pits and seasonal mud holes, though stock vehicles with proper tires can handle it during dry conditions. Spring wildflower displays are spectacular, but summer heat and humidity make fall through early spring the preferred seasons. No permits required and plenty of dispersed camping opportunities along the route. This is living history—a chance to drive through nature’s recovery from one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever hit the Gulf Coast.
