Bienville National Forest Forest Road 501 Mill Creek Technical Loop

Abandoned sawmill ruins in steep pine country

Difficult

Forest Road 501 drops into the Mill Creek drainage through some of the steepest terrain in the Bienville National Forest, following old timber company railroad grades cut into the hillsides in the 1910s. The narrow track winds between towering loblolly pines and bottomland hardwoods, crossing Mill Creek on submerged concrete slabs where the old Whitten Sawmill once operated. Stone foundations and rusted machinery still mark the mill site, now overgrown with kudzu and Virginia creeper vines thick enough to hide a truck.

This is difficult technical terrain requiring experienced drivers and well-equipped 4WD vehicles with rock sliders and skid plates. The steep descents into creek bottoms demand low-range gearing and careful line selection through loose shale and exposed limestone. Creek crossings can rise to door-handle height after heavy rains, and the rocky bottom will test your differential covers. Best attempted during dry months from July through October. No permits required but inform the Forest City ranger station of your plans. Dispersed camping available at higher elevations away from the creek. Expect zero cell service in the drainage.
