Dolliver Memorial State Park Prairie Creek Backcountry Circuit

Ancient prairie and 300-million-year-old fossils

Easy

Dolliver’s Prairie Creek Backcountry Circuit threads through terrain that time forgot, where the Des Moines River carved gypsum bluffs and left behind fossil-rich creek beds that date back 300 million years. The route starts at Boneyard Hollow, following cattle trails through native prairie before dropping into creek bottoms where brachiopods and crinoids wash out after every flood. Old homestead foundations dot the high prairie, including the ruins of a one-room schoolhouse that served Norwegian settlers through the 1940s.

This easy to moderate trail suits stock high-clearance vehicles, though the creek crossing at mile 4 can challenge low-slung rigs during spring runoff. Best from May through October when prairie wildflowers peak and creek levels stay reasonable. No permits needed, but respect private land boundaries marked by the park. Dispersed camping allowed in designated areas, and the fossil hunting alone makes this worth the drive through Iowa’s corn country.
