Brushy Creek State Recreation Area Backcountry Circuit

Prairie restoration roads with forgotten homesteads

Difficult

The backside of Brushy Creek winds through 6,000 acres of reconstructed prairie where corn once grew, following old farm lanes and maintenance roads past stone foundations of homesteads abandoned during the 1980s farm crisis. The route crosses Brushy Creek itself at three unmarked fords, including a technical spot near the old Severin place where limestone bedrock creates a natural causeway that’s underwater during spring runoff.

Difficult rating due to creek crossings that can be waist-deep during wet years and soft prairie soil that turns into axle-deep gumbo. Stock 4WD with recovery gear essential – this isn’t maintained for public access. Best attempted August through October when water levels drop and ground firms up. No camping allowed but Fort Dodge is 20 minutes away for resupply. You’ll see Iowa prairie as it existed before the plow, plus genuine ghost farmsteads the history books forgot.
