Ruta del Desierto de Atacama Norte

Mars training in Chile's copper country

Difficult

The northern Atacama route cuts through terrain so barren it makes Mars look hospitable, threading between abandoned nitrate ghost towns and active lithium mining operations near Calama. This backcountry circuit connects the Chuquicamata copper mine area with the remote salt flats around Salar de Ascotan, passing through elevations where oxygen gets thin and the landscape turns alien. You’ll cross mining roads that have seen more ore trucks than tourist rigs, with waypoints like the abandoned Oficina Chacabuco nitrate works and the surreal blue-green pools of the Tatio Geyser access roads.

This is serious high-altitude desert driving demanding excellent navigation skills and a well-prepped rig with extra fuel, water, and emergency gear. Stock 4WD handles most sections but low-range helps on the steeper mining access climbs above 4,000 meters. May through September offers the most stable weather, though nights can hit freezing even in summer. No services for 200+ kilometers once you commit, but you get solitude in one of Earth’s most otherworldly landscapes plus real insight into Chile’s mining backbone.
