Atacama Desert Geysers del Tatio Dispersed Camping
Scattered rough camping spots around the Geysers del Tatio at 14,173 feet elevation, where steam columns erupt most dramatically at sunrise. The altiplano landscape is stark and otherworldly — vast brown plains punctuated by distant volcanic peaks and the alien sight of boiling water shooting skyward in sub-freezing temperatures. Nights drop well below freezing year-round, even in summer. No facilities whatsoever. Bring everything including water.
Reached via rough dirt roads from San Pedro de Atacama, about 2.5 hours drive. The final approach requires high-clearance vehicles due to rocky terrain and water crossings. Vicuñas and flamingos frequent the area. Most visitors arrive for sunrise tours, leaving camping spots relatively private after 10am.
