Atacama Desert Mining Circuit
High-altitude mining roads in Earth's driest desert
This circuit connects abandoned copper and nitrate mining operations scattered across the Atacama’s moonscape between Calama and San Pedro de Atacama. The route follows bone-dry mining roads past ghost towns like Chacabuco and Humberstone, crosses the Salar de Atacama at 7,500 feet, and climbs to active mines at 14,000+ feet elevation. Expect corrugated roads that’ll rattle your teeth loose and sudden elevation changes that’ll leave you gasping in the thin air.
Expert difficulty due to extreme altitude, zero margin for error, and complete remoteness. Serious 4WD with low range essential for steep mining roads and loose volcanic scree. Carry minimum 5 gallons extra fuel, 2 days water per person, and emergency shelter. Avoid December-February flash flood season. Permits required for some mining areas—check in Calama. What you get: otherworldly landscapes, genuine solitude, and bragging rights for conquering one of Earth’s most hostile environments.
