Halfmoon Road to Champion Mill — Sawatch Range Timberline Circuit via Twin Lakes
Between Colorado's two tallest peaks.
Out of Leadville, Halfmoon Road climbs fast into the Sawatch Range, hugging the flanks of Mount Elbert — Colorado’s highest point at 14,440 feet — before cutting through the Halfmoon Creek drainage toward the historic Champion Mill site, a remnant of 1880s silver operations now reduced to scattered timber and rusted iron. The route links Twin Lakes Reservoir on the Arkansas River side to the upper Halfmoon Creek trailheads, passing through dense spruce-fir forest that opens onto exposed rocky benches with dead-on views of both Elbert and Mount Massive. The roughest section is the upper Halfmoon spur past the Mount Elbert trailhead, where loose rock and embedded boulders test suspension travel.
High-clearance 4WD is required above the lower Halfmoon Road junction — stock rigs with good articulation handle it fine but keep speeds down on the embedded rock. The road is typically open mid-June through October depending on snowpack; the San Isabel National Forest ranger station in Leadville has current conditions. No permit required. Fuel in Leadville before heading out — there’s nothing past Twin Lakes. Dispersed camping is legal along Halfmoon Creek. What you get here is genuine Colorado high country without the crowds that mob the trailheads on weekends — go midweek.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle Halfmoon Road to Champion Mill, or do I need a lift?
A stock high-clearance 4WD like a Tacoma or 4Runner handles this trail fine. The rocky sections and rutted dirt don't require a lift, but low-range and decent all-terrain tires are strongly advised — especially on the steeper climbs near Halfmoon Creek.
When does this trail actually open after winter, and is snow a real concern?
June through October is the reliable window, but snow can linger on shaded sections into late June at these elevations. Check San Isabel National Forest road conditions before heading out — early season can leave you punching through soft spots above 11,000 feet.
Do I need a permit to run this trail or camp along it?
No permit is required to drive the trail. Dispersed camping in San Isabel National Forest is free, but you must camp 100 feet from water, roads, and trails — standard national forest rules apply, no fee station here.
What's the hardest section of this trail and what should I actually expect?
The roughest stretch is along the upper Halfmoon Creek drainage where loose rock and embedded boulders demand careful tire placement. Nothing technically extreme, but the consequence of a wrong line at elevation with limited turnaround space keeps you honest — it's moderate, not a Sunday cruise.
How far is the nearest gas, and is there any water I can filter along the trail?
Leadville is your last fuel stop, about 10-15 miles from the trailhead — top off there without question. Halfmoon Creek and several tributary streams provide filterable water along the route, but treat everything before drinking.
