Mosquito Pass Road

At 13,186 feet above sea level, Mosquito Pass claims the title of America’s highest driveable pass, threading between Leadville and Fairplay through the heart of Colorado’s mining country. The route climbs relentlessly from Leadville’s historic mining district, passing the crumbling remains of the London Mine and countless other boom-era operations that once extracted millions in gold and silver from these unforgiving peaks. Above treeline, the road becomes a narrow shelf carved into loose talus, where one wrong move means a tumble down thousand-foot slopes.

This is expert-only terrain demanding serious preparation and experience. Stock vehicles won’t survive the boulder fields and exposed switchbacks—you need heavy-duty skid plates, low-range gearing, and the skills to navigate technical rock gardens at oxygen-starved altitude. Weather can turn deadly fast above treeline; attempt this only between July and early September when snow has cleared. The reward is standing atop the Continental Divide with views stretching across half of Colorado, surrounded by the ghosts of America’s greatest mining boom.
