Chemin Forestier de la Zec de la Rivière-Batiscan — Réserve faunique des Laurentides Southern Plateau Circuit
Batiscan headwaters — cobble crossings, bog roads, true plateau wild.
The Zec de la Rivière-Batiscan occupies the southern buffer of the Réserve faunique des Laurentides, sitting between the heavily traveled Route 155 corridor and the reserve’s interior lake country. You enter off Chemin des Bouleaux near Sainte-Thècle and immediately climb onto the Laurentian plateau, where the road transitions from graded gravel to rough double-track threading through black spruce and tamarack bog. The Rivière Batiscan herself crosses the route in three places — the third crossing, about 35 km in near Lac des Commissaires, is the one that turns back unprepared rigs after spring runoff. The riverbed is round cobble over bedrock, slick enough to eat a misjudged line without warning.
Difficulty sits solidly at moderate-to-difficult depending on season and recent rain. You need real 4WD with lockers or a limited-slip rear at minimum; a full-size truck on 33s will manage the crossings but will suffer on the tighter shelf sections. Zec access requires a day pass or seasonal permit — buy at the Zec Batiscan entry station or online through their website. Fuel in Sainte-Thècle before entry; none inside. Best season is late June through October. The payoff is genuine plateau wilderness, remote fishing camps on lakes that see almost no recreational pressure, and the particular silence of a Canadian boreal morning when the mist is still sitting on the water.
