Chemin du Lac Taureau — Lanaudière Réservoir Circuit via Manawan Access Roads
Shield rock and reservoir shores deep in Lanaudière.
Lac Taureau is a massive hydro reservoir carved out of the Lanaudière highlands northeast of Saint-Michel-des-Saints, and the network of forestry roads that ring its northern and eastern shores is serious overland country. The main circuit departs Saint-Michel-des-Saints on Chemin Kaiagamac heading north, threads through managed cuts and boreal second growth, and eventually pushes toward the Rivière Matawin headwaters — the same river system that was flooded to create the reservoir in 1931. Key waypoints include the remote boat launch at Baie du Milieu and the rough spur toward Lac Brûlé, where the road deteriorates into two-track across exposed Canadian Shield bedrock with serious washouts after spring melt.
Difficulty is moderate to difficult depending on season — spring is a mudfest, summer is manageable with a proper high-clearance rig, fall is the sweet spot. You need at minimum a lifted truck or SUV with all-terrain tires; a locker helps on the Shield rock sections. Fuel up hard in Saint-Michel-des-Saints — there’s nothing out here. Cell service dies fast north of the village. Dispersed camping is possible along most of the Crown forestry roads. No formal permit required for the forestry network, but respect Atikamekw community boundaries near Manawan. This one rewards patience and punishes overconfidence.
