Chemin Forestier de la Zec Lavigne — Outaouais Shield Northern Forestry Circuit

Shield mud, moose, and zero cell signal.

Moderate

The Zec Lavigne sits northeast of Mont-Laurier in the Outaouais region — a genuine working forestry zone where the road surface shifts without warning from packed gravel to rutted mud tracks that’ll suck the confidence right out of a two-wheel-drive. The main corridor follows the upper drainage of the Rivière du Lièvre tributaries, passing through active and recovering cut blocks before dropping toward a series of small lakes used for fly-in fishing access. The Côte-du-Nord descent near kilometre 38 is the defining obstacle: a loose-shale switchback where loaded rigs have left deep ruts and the shoulders fall away sharply. Watch for logging trucks — they own this road and they don’t slow down.

A stock high-clearance 4WD with all-terrain tires handles the dry-season run, but add-a-leaf and a skid plate setup are smart investments once the mud season arrives in late May. The Zec Lavigne requires a daily access pass purchasable at the Zec office in Mont-Laurier — budget $15–20 CAD per vehicle. Fuel up before you leave town; there’s nothing on route. Best window is late June through September. The payoff is genuine solitude, moose sightings that border on absurd, and lakeshore campsites that cost almost nothing.
