Chemin Forestier de la Zec Maison-de-Pierre — Laurentians Shield Interior Forestry Loop
Shield granite and spruce — Laurentians raw.
The Zec Maison-de-Pierre sits in the heart of the Laurentians just northeast of the Réserve faunique de Papineau-Labelle buffer zone, and it offers some of the most legitimate Canadian Shield driving in the lower Laurentians. The forestry circuit here runs roughly 90 kilometres of gravel and exposed bedrock roads threading between a chain of lakes — Lac de la Pierre being the anchor — through territory that seasonal ATV riders and moose hunters know well but overland rigs rarely visit. The road surface alternates between packed gravel and exposed Shield granite slabs that demand slow, deliberate tire placement. The section north of Lac Castor is the roughest, with off-camber shelf road cut into a hillside above a creek drainage — one of those spots you measure twice before committing.
High clearance is mandatory; 4WD with lockers is strongly recommended for the northern sections in anything but ideal dry conditions. Tires matter here — the granite slabs punish worn rubber. Access requires a ZEC day pass purchased online or at the Maison-de-Pierre ZEC entrance kiosk. Best season is mid-June through early October; snowmelt makes May a crapshoot. There’s a designated campsite network within the ZEC — reserve early for summer weekends. Fuel in Saint-Jovite (Mont-Tremblant) before entry. The reward is genuine Shield wilderness within three hours of Montreal, with lake camping that feels genuinely remote.
