Pioneer Mountains Backcountry Loop

Technical mining loop through forgotten peaks

Expert

The Pioneer Mountains hide some of Montana’s best-kept secrets behind a maze of old mining roads that climb from the Big Hole Valley to 10,000-foot passes. This loop connects Coolidge Ghost Town with Elkhorn Hot Springs via Baldy Mountain, passing dozens of abandoned mines and mill sites from the 1880s silver boom. The technical section over Baldy Mountain requires experienced drivers—loose rock, steep grades, and tight switchbacks demand respect, especially around the old Hecla Mine ruins at 9,800 feet.

Expert difficulty due to exposure and technical rock sections; modified 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear essential. The route is impassable November through May due to snow, and afternoon thunderstorms can make the high country deadly. Stock up on fuel and supplies in Wise River before starting this 65-mile adventure. What you get is solitude in genuine mining country, with camping spots overlooking the entire Bitterroot Range and hot springs to soak your bones at the end.
