Lonesome Highway — Toiyabe Crest to Big Smoky Valley via Arc Dome Wilderness

Nevada's forgotten spine, 10K feet of silence.

Moderate

The Toiyabe Range splits the center of Nevada like a spine nobody talks about — and that anonymity is exactly the point. The Toiyabe Crest Trail parallels this route from the north as you grind up Forest Road 119 out of Ione Valley, climbing through pinon-juniper into isolated high-country where mule deer outnumber tire tracks by a thousand to one. Arc Dome, at 11,773 feet, dominates the skyline to your south as the road traverses exposed ridgeline before descending sharply into Big Smoky Valley through loose shale switchbacks that punish drivers who don’t air down. The ruins of old mining operations around the Ophir Creek drainage remind you this country was once full of desperate men looking for silver.

Moderate difficulty overall with a few genuinely rocky, narrow shelf sections on the crest descent that require careful line selection. A high-clearance 4WD is mandatory — a lifted truck or SUV with a locker handles it cleanly. The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest imposes no permit requirements, but services are essentially nonexistent: Tonopah is your last fuel and resupply point, 60 miles south. Water is scarce on the crest; carry everything you need. Best window is July through September — the road above 9,000 feet closes with first significant snow and may not reopen until late May. Cell service drops to zero once you leave Highway 50.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle Lonesome Highway, or does it need a lift?

A stock high-clearance 4WD like a Tacoma or 4Runner is the minimum — no lift required, but don't attempt it in a 2WD crossover. Rocky sections near the crest will drag skid plates on low-clearance rigs.

When does the trail actually open after winter? Can I run it in June?

July through September is the reliable window. Snow lingers near the 10,100-foot crest well into June, and fall storms can close it fast after September — check with Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest before going early or late in the season.

Do I need a permit to run this trail or camp along it?

No permit required for the trail itself or dispersed camping in Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The route skirts Arc Dome Wilderness — motorized vehicles are not allowed inside the wilderness boundary, so stay on the designated route.

What's the hardest section, and what should I actually be ready for?

The stretch along the Toiyabe Crest near max elevation is the roughest — loose rock, exposed shelf road, and limited room to turn around. It's not a white-knuckle experience for experienced wheelers, but a lapse in attention at altitude with fatigued passengers is where people get into trouble.

How far is the nearest gas from the trailhead, and is 52 miles enough to drain a standard tank?

Tonopah is your last reliable fuel stop — roughly 40–60 miles from either end of the trail depending on your approach. At altitude with 4WD engaged across 52 miles of dirt, top off in Tonopah before you go; don't count on making it back on fumes.
