Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest — Big Hole River Upper Valley Dispersed Camp
Pull off along Forest Service roads flanking the upper Big Hole River and you’ve got the real Montana deal — open sky, cottonwood-lined river bends, good fishing, and enough flat ground for a full rig-and-trailer setup. No signage, no fee box, no crowds on weekdays. Fire restrictions can hit hard in August, so check with the Wisdom Ranger District before you build one. The river corridor sees elk and pronghorn regularly, and the Pintler peaks are visible to the north — this is the heart of the Trans-America Trail corridor through the Big Hole Valley.
Access via MT-43 west of Wisdom, then drop onto Forest Road spurs heading toward the river. High-clearance 2WD handles most of it in dry conditions; after rain the clay-mixed two-tracks get greasy fast. Season runs June through October — the valley floor sits around 6,200 ft and gets snow early. Water from the river requires treatment. Cell service is basically nonexistent out here.
