Chemin du Lac Kenauk — Outaouais Laurentian Shield Wilderness Loop

Shield granite and moose country near Montebello.

Moderate

Kenauk Nature, east of Montebello along the Ottawa River, encompasses roughly 65,000 acres of Laurentian Shield wilderness that most Quebecers have never driven through. The internal road network — a web of roughed-in forestry and hunting access tracks connecting dozens of lakes — is exactly what classic Shield overlanding looks like: exposed pink granite slabs, root-cracked two-track, and lake views that appear without warning through the spruce. The main loop through the reserve covers approximately 80 km and connects Lac des Îles, Lac Gagnon, and Lac Maskinongé before looping back south toward the Papineau-Labelle border country. Water crossings over culverted brook drainages are common and mostly fine, but early spring sees them overwhelmed.

Access requires a day-use or lodging permit through Kenauk Nature — this is private managed wilderness, not a public crown land free-for-all, so plan ahead and book. That said, the access fee keeps the roads quiet and the experience legitimate. High-clearance 4WD handles the granite ledge sections comfortably; a stock crossover will struggle with the rock shelves and embedded roots. Best season is June through October. Cell service is non-existent inside the reserve. Pack your own water, a full-size spare, and enough food to be self-sufficient for a full day. The moose density here is genuinely impressive at dusk.
