Chemin de la Rivière Gatineau — Réserve faunique des Outaouais Northern Interior Road

Fur trade river, Shield mud, moose country.

Moderate

The upper Gatineau River has been a canoe highway since the fur trade era, and the forestry road shadowing its northern reaches into the Réserve faunique des Outaouais carries that same sense of getting somewhere real. Starting north of Maniwaki on the Route 105 corridor, the track climbs onto the Shield plateau, crosses several unnamed tributaries feeding the Gatineau, and passes through active logging cuts interspersed with old-growth pockets that somehow survived the axe. The Rivière Désert confluence is a key waypoint — there’s a wide gravel bar good for a camp and a ford crossing that runs knee-deep through July and thigh-deep in June. Moose density here is among the highest in southern Quebec.

High-clearance 4WD is mandatory; a locker helps on the wet clay sections that emerge after any rain. The reserve requires a daily access pass purchased through Sépaq. Fuel up in Maniwaki — the last pump is 40 kilometres south of the gate. Cell service is gone by the time you’re 20 kilometres in. Best window is mid-June through September; October works if you want colour and frozen mornings. This is not a day trip — budget two full days minimum to do it right and not feel rushed at the fords.
