Forest Road 701 Cranberry Glades Loop
Ancient bogs and rare northern wilderness
Forest Road 701 winds through the Cranberry Wilderness backcountry, accessing one of West Virginia’s most unique ecosystems where ancient peat bogs survive from the last ice age. The route climbs from Richwood through dense spruce-fir forests that feel more like Canada than Appalachia, eventually reaching the Cranberry Glades boardwalk area where rare northern plants and wild blueberries thrive. Black bear encounters are common, especially during late summer berry season around Flag Rock.
This moderate scenic drive handles well with stock high-clearance vehicles, though muddy sections can challenge inexperienced drivers after rain. Summer and early fall provide best access and wildlife viewing, but expect heavy visitor traffic during peak foliage. No permits required, but respect wilderness boundaries and pack bear spray. The experience delivers rare northern ecosystem exposure, excellent dispersed camping, and some of the cleanest mountain air in the state.
