Chemin Forestier de la Zec de la Rivière-Bell — Abitibi-Témiscamingue Boreal Interior Circuit

Boreal clay, river mud, zero cell service.

Difficult

The Zec de la Rivière-Bell sits in the heart of Quebec’s Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, a landscape shaped by glacial lakes, black spruce, and decades of forestry activity. This circuit follows a network of active and semi-active logging roads along the Bell River drainage — a route that serious Quebec overlanders know means river mud, washed-out culverts, and long stretches with zero civilization. The Bell River itself is a waypoint worth stopping for: the crossings are real, the current moves, and a stock rig with bad approach angles will find out fast. Expect unmarked junctions, rough corduroy sections, and gates that may or may not be locked depending on active harvesting cycles.

This is honest boreal Quebec — not a groomed trail system. High clearance and 4WD are mandatory; lockers or aggressive all-terrain rubber make the difference on soft clay sections after rain. The Zec requires a daily access pass purchased through the Zec de la Rivière-Bell organization. Fuel in Amos before you head in — there is nothing out here. Late June through September is passable; spring breakup turns the clay roads to axle-deep soup. What you get is genuine isolation, exceptional walleye fishing, moose on every bend, and the kind of silence that reminds you why you built the truck in the first place.
