Barguzin Ridge Sable Hunting Trail
Ancient sable hunters' path above Lake Baikal
This ancient sable trappers’ route climbs the eastern shore of Lake Baikal through the UNESCO-protected Barguzin Nature Reserve, following hunting paths used for over 300 years. The trail winds through pristine Siberian taiga before breaking above treeline at 1,800 meters, offering spectacular views across Baikal’s deepest waters. The notorious Devil’s Ladder section at kilometer 67 requires technical rock crawling through a narrow gorge where centuries of hunters carved footholds into granite cliffs.
Difficult rating with steep grades up to 35%, loose scree descents, and narrow ledges with no guardrails. Stock 4WD with good ground clearance and experienced driver mandatory – several sections demand precise wheel placement over exposed granite shelves. June to September only due to early snowfall at elevation. Permits required through Zapovednik authorities. Fuel available in Ust-Barguzin, but carry 5 days minimum supplies. Reward is some of Siberia’s most pristine wilderness and views that haven’t changed since the Czars ruled Russia.
